Quickgen HRM
HR, Payroll & Asset Platform

My roleI designed the data model and built the API and the web portal, and led the Flutter app. Quickgen runs its own HR, payroll and lab on it.
The situation
An engineer leaves on a Friday. HR needs the final salary, the unused leave paid out, the advance recovered, and the oscilloscope and dev kit he signed out back on the shelf. In spreadsheets and chat, nobody could say for certain what he still had.
Attendance lived in a biometric device, salaries in a sheet, contracts in email and lab equipment in people's memories. Each answer meant asking someone.
- Money and documents must never be silently rewritten. An employee may already have kept a payslip.
- Attendance has to be honest: at the office, not from home with a fake location.
- The hosting plan has no background jobs, yet reminders, exit completions and device syncs still have to run.
- Employees, managers, HR and the lab custodian each see only what their role allows.
Architecture decisions I made
- D1Four ways to prove you are at the officeCheck-in works by geofence around the office, by the office network, by an office beacon, or from the biometric device at the door. Each record notes whether it came from the portal or the biometric device.
- D2Payslips are versioned, never editedA correction issues a new payslip that supersedes the old one, and the old row is marked corrected with a reason. The full history survives, and the QR code on each payslip lets a bank or landlord check it is genuine without an account.
- D3An append-only ledger for the labEvery movement of equipment is a new row: received, checked out, returned, sent for repair, lost or found. Nothing is updated or deleted, by anyone, including an admin. Mistakes are corrected with another movement.Trade-off More rows and stricter screens, in exchange for a register you can audit.
- D4Exit is blocked until the kit comes backOffboarding cannot complete while the ledger still shows items with the person. Anything not returned feeds into the final settlement.
- D5Scheduled work rides on real trafficWith no scheduler on the hosting plan, due reminders and syncs are attached to ordinary requests as background tasks, after the response is sent. No user ever waits for them.
In practice
One person's exit, end to endillustrative example, real schema
- ResignThe employee submits a resignation in the portal. The manager approves it, then the CEO.
- ClearThe clearance list checks the ledger: a logic analyser and a dev kit are still issued to them.
- ReturnThe custodian scans both QR tags back in. Each scan is a new ledger movement.
- SettleThe final settlement adds the last salary and unused leave, recovers the open advance and any notice shortfall.
- CloseOnly now can the exit complete. Letters and payslips carry a QR code anyone can use to verify them.
What I took away
- In HR software, the audit trail is the product. Design so that nothing can be quietly overwritten.
- Build for the company you are. Quickgen is a hardware lab, so equipment had to sit next to payroll, not in a separate tool.
Questions about this project
What problem did Quickgen HRM solve?
A growing engineering company was running attendance, payroll and company equipment across spreadsheets and chat, with no audit trail and no clean way to settle accounts when someone left.
Who built Quickgen HRM, and how does it work?
I did (Qalab Hassnain Agha). I designed the data model and built the API and the web portal, and led the Flutter app. Quickgen runs its own HR, payroll and lab on it. How it works: A FastAPI and Postgres backend with 301 endpoints across 27 features, a React portal for employees, managers and admins, and a Flutter app. Payroll covers tax, advances, loans, reimbursements and final settlement. Payslips, letters and employment records can be verified publicly by QR. Lab inventory is an append-only ledger, and an offboarding clearance gate blocks an exit while assets are still issued, feeding asset recovery into the final settlement. Stack: FastAPI, PostgreSQL · SQLAlchemy · Alembic, React · TypeScript, Flutter, JWT, Docker.
What results did Quickgen HRM achieve?
Live portal used by the Quickgen team. 301 API endpoints across 27 features. Append-only inventory ledger linked to final settlement. QR-verifiable payslips, letters and employment records.
Can I hire Qalab to build something similar to Quickgen HRM?
Yes. Contracts from $25 an hour, full-time remote from $3,000 a month, fixed-price prototypes from $600 and builds from $2,000, and fractional CTO retainers from $800 a month. Book a free 30-minute call and I will tell you honestly whether and how I would build it.
